IRVINE, CA – Redshirt freshman Harrison Pyatt threw a solid five innings in his first start of the season and true freshman Jordan Verdon hit a home run to help carry SDSU (1-3) over the University of California Irvine (2-4) 4-2.

The victory, gets the Aztecs into the win column for the first time in 2016 after being swept by nationally ranked University of Oregon over the opening weekend.

SDSU jumped out to an early lead in the top of the 2nd inning when sophomore Justin Wylie doubled to right and was brought home later in the inning when David Hensley doubled to left.

After the Anteater’s tied the game at one run apiece in the 5th inning on a sacrifice fly by UCI’s Adam Alcantara, Verdon broke the tie in the top of the 6th with a homer over the right center wall. Keston Hiura brought UCI even in the bottom of the 6th with his sacrifice fly.

SDSU would go ahead for good in the top of the 8th as Justin Wylie (2 doubles, two runs scored) and Tyler Atkinson (1 single, 1 rbi) pushed across and additional 2 runs to put the Aztecs ahead for good.

Harrison Pyatt went five innings for the Aztecs allowing one run and striking out four. Brian Heldman got his first save of the season pitching the final two innings to shut down the Anteaters and secure the first win of the season for Mark Martinez’s club.
