Myer’s bat wakes up, drives in 5 as Padres beat Reds 8-5 in Peoria
Peoria, AZ – Wil Myers hit a home run (2 run) and a triple (3 RBI) as the Padres batted around in an 8 run 4th inning and James Shields pitched 4 1/3 strong innings as the Padres (6-12) beat the Reds (9-12) 8-5.
Myers had been struggling all spring to find contact at the plate, entering last nights game hitting a measly .167 during Cactus League play this spring. In the top half of the 4th, James Shields started the inning by hitting Ivan De Jesus Jr and gave up a 2-run bomb to straight away center field to Joey Votto.
Matt Kemp led off the 4th inning Monday night with a single to continue his hot bat this spring. Myers followed with a 2-run home run to tie the game.
Reds starter Cody Reed then walked Yangervis Solarte followed by an Alexei Ramirez triple to give the Padres a 3-2 lead. After another walk and a single by Christian Bethencourt and Shields, Reed hit Jon Jay before striking out Cory Spangenberg and giving up a single to Matt Kemp. Myers then came back to the plate with the bases loaded and slammed a bases clearing triple to cap the scoring for the Padres at 8 runs in the monster 4th that chased Cody Reed.
Shields enjoyed a perfect three innings allowing no hits and striking out five before running into trouble in the top of the fourth. Shields ended up with five K’s, giving up one hit, three walks, and four runs (two earned).
Matt Kemp added two hits of his own and reached base three times for the Padres.
Padres Notes:
James Shields remained in the game after taking a hard liner off the back of his left thigh in the fifth inning. According to the San Diego Union Tribune’s Dennis Lin, James Shields says his hamstring “is fine.”
The Padres optioned OF Alex Dickerson to Triple-A El-Paso. C Jason Hagerty and infielder’s Nick Noonan and Ryan Schimpf were reassigned to minor league camp. Forty-four players remain on the major league roster.
Today:
