Sunday afternoon in downtown San Diego at Petco Park. You think it’s for military appreciation day Padres baseball right? Not today my friend. The MLB All Star Weekend has begun and Sunday kicked it off with the Futures Game and the Legends/Celebrities Softball Game.

The Futures game was showcases some of the best prospects from MLB teams around the league. The Padres had three players playing in the game with Hunter Renfroe, Manuel Margot, and Carlos Asuaje. The teams were split into team USA and the World team. Team USA led 3-0 after four innings. The World team then made it 3-2.

USA almost took a 4-2 lead but Padres prospect Manuel Margot robbed USA of a home run with an amazing catch to keep the ball in the yard. The World team would go on to score 11 unanswered and win 11-3 over team USA.

 

The Legends vs Celebrities Softball game did not disappoint. San Diego Legends such as Ricky Henderson, Ozzie Smith, Trevor Hoffman, and even Drew Brees were involved in the game. Some other celebrities in attendance were Jamie Foxx, Terry Crews, and Landon Donovan. Former Chargers QB Drew Brees hit a home run in the game (my personal favorite highlight of the game). The American team would defeat the National team 8-7 as the game tying run was thrown out with a lay out at home plate to end the game.

The game would be followed up by a terrific fireworks show to end day 1 of All Star weekend.

Monday was the Home Run derby as Padres All Star Wil Myers sent 10 home runs out of Petco park but failed to advance to the 2nd round. Myers was one of the eight participants sending balls into the stands in an attempt to be the 2016 Home Run Derby King. Your 2016 Home Run Derby King is…. Giancarlo Stanton. Stanton hit a record 61 home runs (24-17-20) including 64% (39) traveling over 440 feet.
