The curse of San Diego Chargers Alumni weekend
Coming off a disaster of a game in Denver, the San Diego Chargers will host the Tennessee Titans on Sunday in what will be the Chargers Alumni Weekend. The Chargers will have former player introduced on the field at halftime and you could probably find some of them in the parking lot before the game. Sounds like a fun day right? Former Chargers players, home game vs Titans which sounds like an easy win. But the Chargers have not won on Alumni weekend since 2009. They currently are on a six-game losing streak on alumni weekend games. Let’s take a look at those games.
The Chargers last Alumni Weekend win was November 29th, 2009 when the Chargers introduced their 50th Anniversary team. The Chargers crushed the Kansas City Chiefs 43-14. The following year on December 5th, 2010, the Chargers lost to the Oakland Raiders 13-28, sealing the sweep for the Raiders that year.
The next five alumni weekend games would involve inducting a player into the Chargers Ring of Honor. On October 9th, 2011, the Chargers inducted the Legend Junior Seau into the Ring of Honor. The Chargers would blow a 13-3 lead to the Tim Tebow led Denver Broncos in a 13-16 overtime loss. November 25th, 2012 was almost a mirror image of the previous but will be forever remembered. The Chargers inducted Darren Bennett into the Ring of Honor and the Chargers blew another 13-3 lead. The Chargers gave up a 4th n 29 that led to the game-tying field and the Chargers lost 13-16 in overtime for the second year in a row.
In 2013, The Chargers would induct not a player, but a team into the Ring of Honor. The Chargers 1963 AFL Championship team would have their banner hung into the Ring of Honor on December 1st, 2013 against the Bengals. Chargers would fall to the Bengals 10-17.
The next two games were both against the Chiefs and netted the same result. On Oct 19th, 2014, The Chargers inducted Leslie O’Neal who was voted on by the fans and beat out Natrone Means and Anthony Miller. The Chargers would lose a close one on a last second field in a 20-23 loss to the Chiefs. Now my favorite Alumni Weekend game, November 22nd, 2015, LaDainian Tomlinson has his number retired and is inducted into the Chargers Ring of Honor. The Chargers would get crushed 3-33 to the Chiefs.
This Week, on November 6th, 2016, your San Diego Chargers will attempt to end their six-game losing streak on Alumni weekend. According to Chargers.com, the Chargers will honor all 38 Chargers Hall of Fame Inductees. The Chargers ended a previous six-game losing streak earlier this year when they defeat the Falcons in a thriller 33-30 to end their six-game losing streak to Atlanta. The Titans seem like the team the Chargers can end this streak against. According to www.footballdb.com, the Chargers are 26-17-1 all-time against the Titans/Oilers. Before the 17-20 loss in 2013, San Diego had won 9 straight vs the Titans. The last time the Chargers lost at home to the Titans was 90 in a 7-17 loss to the Oilers.
