Training with the San Diego Surge

On Sunday, January 22nd, I had the opportunity to workout with the San Diego Surge. I originally was there to get some photos, videos, and do some scouting. While taking some videos, team owner Christina Carrillo offered me the opportunity to train with them. My love for football wasn’t going to let turn this down.

The training started with a rotation of three groups with three drills. The drills were the Ladder drill, Bag drill, and Cone drill. The team and I spent about 30-40 minutes doing these drills and then the team split.

Some players went to the weight room, and some stayed on the field to throw some routes. I followed the team to the weight room. The weight room was similar to the drills we ran in the beginning. There was a rotation of workouts involving Curls, weighting Lunges, rowing/shoulder press, and Kettlebells. After going through each drill twice, we then grabbed bench press bars and did a two person rotation of lift the bar over the head. After completing these workouts, we all headed back out to the field for a little conditioning. The conditioning was a few 40 and 20 yards sprints and that was the end of that.

Afterwards, some players stayed after to run routes and practice kicks. I hung around the QB’s and receivers watching them catch balls and help retrieve the balls and even played a little safety.

After a being at a couple of practices with the Surge, there are two things that caught my mind. First thing is the family mentality of this team. The players love each other. The first practice they were all happy to see each other and were all cheering each other on through the drills. It’s absolutely amazing to players get along that well on a team when you consider how many different areas these players come from and the fact they are competing for a starting spot with each other. The other thing that caught my mind was that these players work hard. These players care about the game and care about winning and it showed in practice and that’s where winning begins. You combine the family mentality and the hard work, only thing that can beat this team is themselves. #SurgeOn
