Sockers Fall 7-3 to Sols at home.
The San Diego Sockers came into the Valley View Casino Center 2 Wins from a Championship birth. But standing in their way was the powerful Soles De Sonora. Game 1 of the semi-finals between the Sockers and Sonora would start out with Sonora taking a quick 0-1 lead. Sockers would try to respond but Sonora would steal the ball and take off on a breakaway opportunity. Sonora’s shot would bounce into Chris Toth’s hands but he would bobble the bobble into the net for a 2-0 lead. Sockers would finally answer as Luan Oliveira would score to cut the lead to 1-2. Sonora would answer to make the score 3-1 Sonora and the end of the 1st quarter. The Sockers would play better defense in the 2nd quarter, only allowing 1 goal. But they would continue their offensive struggles from the 1st quarter.
A lot of the shots the Sockers took missed the net by inches. The Sockers probably could have had the lead or been tied if they had made at least some of the close shots but instead they would go into halftime trailing 1-4. The second half start like the 1st half with another shot barely missing the net. Sockers would battle and pressure and force Sonora into a foul. Sockers not wasting anytime take the free kick and Erick Tovar would hammer it home to cut the lead to 2-4. Not too long after, Tovar would score again bring the Sockers to within 1, 3-4. With all the momentum going the Sockers way, the ref gave Brian Farber a blue card for a sliding attempt at the ball. The only problem is, Farber never made contact with the player, but the Sonora player flopped and laid on the ground and the referee issued a blue card. The Sockers momentum was taken away and they would have to calm their attacks to play 4 vs 5 soccer for 2 minutes.
The 3rd qtr would end with the Sockers defense holding Sonora scoreless, but still trailing with the score 4-3 in favor of Sonora. The 4th quarter started with fans waving rally towels in hope of a San Diego comeback. The Sockers would battle, and still come inches away from tying the game. They even had chances with power plays, and still, the shots were inches away from going in. Sonora eventually would score to make the score 3-5 and the Sockers would bring out a sixth attacker. Sonora wasted no time taking advantage of the empty net and scored again to go up 3-6. The Sockers would miss more close shots before Sonora scored a meaningless goal with 4 seconds left in the game as the Sockers fall 3-7 in Game 1 of the Series.
A must win game 2 will be played in Sonora on Saturday which is where the Sockers season ended last year. As a side note for you, the Sockers lost game one to Sonora last year and rallied in Game 2 against Sonora to force a mini-game which they would lose to end their season.
