San Diego Surge improve to 3-0 with 37-7 win over Vegas.

It has been over a year and a half, but after a long wait, the San Diego Surge finally returned home. The Surge entered their first home game of the season, with an undefeated record of 2-0. The team trying to give the Surge their first loss of the season was the Sin City Trojans of Las Vegas. How well did the Surge play vs Vegas? Let’s dive in and find out. Las Vegas won the toss and elect to receive. The first quarter started with of defensive stops by both teams. Following a 4th down stop by the Surge, the following offensive play was a deep pass by Melissa Gallegos that was tipped in the air and intercepted inside the Vegas 5 yard line. Following a Surge 3 and out, Vegas punted and Deana Guidry took the punt return to the house to give the Surge a 7-0 lead with 8:05 left in the 1st. Later in the 1st, the Surge pinned Vegas inside their own 5 again. This time the Surge got two points out of it as Vegas had a bad snap go over the quarterback’s head and put the end zone. In the second quarter, Vegas started moving the ball better. The Trojans were in field goal range with a 2nd down. Vegas ran to the ball to the left side and Deana Guidry laid a crushing hit and two plays later Guidry would make history. Trojans lined up for a 35-yard field goal. The field was short and landed in the end zone in Guidry’s hands and she ran it 107 yards for a touchdown. Guidry’s 107-yard return is a San Diego Surge record and could be a WFA record as well.

With 2 minutes left in the half, Surge got a 4th down stop and a Trojan play suffered a serious leg injury on the play that delayed the game while they attended to her and got emergency crews on the field. The delay last for a while and led to halftime being skipped. After the injured player was taken off the field, the Surge started their drive which ended with a touchdown pass from Melissa Gallegos to Lorie Moore with 0:05.4 in the half. With the third quarter starting almost immediately after the half ended, the Surge got the ball back 5 seconds after scoring as they were to receive the 2nd half kickoff. Surge drove the ball down and Adriana Gutierrez punched it while carrying defenders on her back. Surge lead 30-0 with 10:18 left in the 3rd. Trojans finally got on the board with an 11-yard touchdown pass with 7:39 left in the 3rd, Surge leading 30-7. Surge would score again with 1:10 left in the 3rd as Jazzmon Stovall ran it in to make it 37-7 and that would be your score after three-quarters of play. Not much action in the 4th quarter as the Surge ran the clock down and Trojans failed to score. The Surge won their home opener 37-7 and improved to 3-0 on the Season. Next week the Surge are home again and face the War Angels of Central Cal. The War Angels are a good team and will be the 1st real test of the season for the Surge.
