Surge defeat Warriors 51-30 in 1st round of WFA Playoffs.

The WFA playoffs are finally among us and the San Diego Surge have a playoff spot. The team standing in their way is the Los Angeles Warriors. The Surge tied the season series 1-1 (41-40, 34-40) during the regular season. Winner moves on in the playoffs and wins the season series between the two. Let’s dig into some playoff action.

The Surge got the ball first and started with a bang as Deana Guidry returned the opening kickoff to the Warriors 7-yard line. The Surge failed to do anything with the great field position and turned the ball over on Downs. Warriors faced a 3rd and 1 from the one on the following drive. Warriors completed a deep pass for big yards but the Surge forced the receiver to fumble on the play and the Surge recovered. Surge drew first blood as the elusive Dejanae Harvey made multiple people miss in a 37-yard touchdown run. A bad snap on the PAT limited the score to 6-0 with 9:00 minutes left in the 1st. Following Warriors drive, LA drove into the RedZone where Sonfroe Robinson intercepted the ball for the Surge. Surge failed to score and Warriors would take advantage as Priscilla Gardner broke tackles and scored on a 50 yd touchdown run. Warriors missed the PAT and the game was tied 6-6 4:19 left in the 1st. Surge regained the lead with a Guidry 2 yd Touchdown run to lead 13-6 after the 1st quarter.

The first half of the 2nd quarter was a defensive battle as neither team could score. The Surge eventually put together a drive that was capped off when Melissa Gallegos found Guidry wide open in the flats for 33 yards and the touchdown to put the Surge up 20-6, 5:41 left in the 2nd quarter. The following kickoff, San Diego attempted an onside kick and the recovered. Suger capitalized with Harvey’s second touchdown of the game for a 27-6 halftime lead. Warriors would strike with a 50-yard touchdown run by Gardner and a 2 point conversion right before halftime. The Surge went into halftime leading 27-14.

Warriors got the ball first to start the 2nd half and they put together a time-consuming drive ending with Gardners 3rd touchdown of the game. After a successful 2 point conversion, the Surge’s 21 point lead was down to 27-22 with 8:57 left in the third. But coming to the rescue the following kickoff was Guidry who took the kick to the house for her 3rd touchdown of the game and a 34-22 Surge lead. Surge defense forced the Warriors to punt and was able to add a Melissa Strother Field Goal before the 3rd quarter ended for a 37-22 lead at 3 quarters of play.

Warriors started the 4th quarter with Gardner’s 4th touchdown of the game, a 25-yard run and 2 point conversion to cut the Surge lead to 37-30 with 13:12 left in the game. San Diego moved the ball into the RedZone on their following drive. Gallegos found threw to an open Clark but an LA defender yanked Clark down before the ball arrived, giving the Surge a 1st and goal at the 2. Two plays later, Gallegos scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak to increase the Surge lead to 44-30 with 9:44 left in the game. Warriors looked to try and score on their next drive to keep their season alive. L.A. drove inside Surge Territory and faced a 4th down. Warriors’ 4th down pass was thrown short of the intended receiver and San Diego took over on downs.
