Surge Defeat War Angels in 35-34 OT Thriller

The San Diego Surge have advanced to the third round of the WFA playoffs after a hard-fought and thrilling win over the Central Cal War Angels. The Surge had lost to the War Angels 7-44 and 12-34 earlier in the year, but when it counted the most, San Diego Came out on top. Let’s see the thrilling action. I guess read is the better term.

Surge took a while to get on the scoreboard in the game, but that didn’t keep the War Angels from scoring and taking a 0-6 lead that they maintained to the end of the 1st quarter.

Central Cal doubled their lead to 0-12 in the 2nd quarter. As Motley Crue would say, it started to look like the Same Ole’ Situation. But the Surge refused to go down and finally got on the scoreboard as Melissa Gallegos found Kaycee Clark for 16 yards to cut the War Angels lead in half 6-12. Surge grabbed their first lead of the game when the elusive Dejanae Harvey made multiple people miss while creating a vapor trail on her way to a 90 yd touchdown run to put the Surge up 13-12. War Angels scored on the last play of the half and converted a 2 pt try to take a 13-20 lead into halftime.

The Surge weren’t ready to go home just yet. San Diego tied the game on a 26 yd Touchdown run by Harvey, her second of the game. The score remained 20-20 after three-quarters of play to set up an amazing ending.

War Angels regained the lead 20-28 with 12:55 left in the game. As Bon Jovi would say, the Surge were Living on a Prayer. The prayer was answered as Deana Guidry scored and the Surge tied the game with a 2pt conversion with 40 seconds left in the game. The game would go into overtime, the first in Surge History according to the San Diego Surge

The game would go into overtime, the first in Surge History according to the San Diego Surge Women’s Football Facebook page. The overtime rules in the WFA are the same as NCAA rules, both teams start with the ball in scoring position with a chance each to score. War Angels got the ball first and scored but missed their conversion for a 28-34 lead. The Surge had one more opportunity to either keep the

The Surge had one more opportunity to either keep the game alive or win it. The veteran quarterback Gallegos scored on a quarterback keeper to tie the game at 34-34 with the extra point for the when coming. Melissa Strother came on for the game-winning extra point and she nailed it to give the Surge a 35-34 Win over the 7-0 (now 7-1) War Angels as the team stormed the field in celebration. The Surge advance to play the Dallas Elite in Dallas. The Elite have not allowed a point all season, with their closest win being a 53-0 Win in the playoffs over the Minnesota Vixen. The Surge will have their hands full in the next game but have shown they will fight anyone anywhere, regardless of the past.
