Aztecs Conquer Devils 30-20 in Tempe

The San Diego Sports Domination Team traveled to Tempe, Arizona this past weekend to watch the San Diego State Aztecs takedown the Sun Devils 30 to 20. The Aztecs moving to 1-10-1 all-time against the Sun Devils of Arizona State. This is a short game recap of our collective thought’s from after the game. If you want to hear a more in-depth recap please tune into our Facebook Live Show that happens every Thursday Night at 9:00 PM. The video will be pinned to our page if you happen to miss it and want to watch the show. At the bottom of this article we have a video recapping our trip to TEMPE. The video includes game highlights from the PAC-12 network and what the highlights looked like from our POV.

The Aztecs led by Walter Camp National Offensive Player of the Week Rashaad Penny’s amazing performance. Penny would single-handedly score 18 of the Aztecs 30 points. One touchdown came on a 95 yards run. One touchdown came on a 99 yard kickoff return. One touchdown came on a 33 yard reception. Penny became the first player in NCAA Football this season to have a Touchdown on the ground, return and reception in the same game. Penny finished the game with 353 all-purpose yards on just 23 touches (15.3 avg.). Penny had 18 carries for 216 yards (12 avg) and one touchdown. Penny also lead the Aztecs receivers 4 catches for 38 yards and 1 touchdown. Penny also was awarded the Mountain West Offensive and Special Teams player of the week awards. He became the first player in Mountain West History to accomplish that feat.

TWO GAME NOTES

Receiving Letdown
The Aztecs receiving core did not have a great game. A thing to add is that three of the five receptions came from FB Nick Bawden (2) and TE Kahale Warring. Meaning the Aztecs WR’s only combined for TWO receptions the entire game. They also had issues with catching the football with ton of dropped passes. The Aztec WR’s will need to hold onto the ball if they want to defeat the Stanford Cardinals on Saturday.

Penalties Kill

The Aztecs committed 12 penalties for a whopping 95 yards. 55 penalty yards coming against the Aztecs offensive and 35 penalty yards coming against the Aztecs defense. If you count the three penalties declined/offset the Aztecs committed 12 penalties for 120 yards. Completely unacceptable. Antonio Rosales had a bad game committing two holding penalties, the defensive unit jumping off sides six times. The Aztecs also left 8 points off the board thanks to an offensive pass interference penalty against Fred Trevillion (53 yard reception) and a Rosales holding penalty on a 9 yard Washington TD run. Fortunately the Aztecs got to field goals on those possessions. The Aztecs should have defeated ASU by 18 points 38 to 20.
