Sockers remain undefeated with 8-5 victory over rival Soles De Sonora
The San Diego Sockers are 1 of 3 undefeated teams remaining in The MASL. San Diego looked to continue its undefeated ways and the team standing in the way of 6-0 was the 1-3 Soles De Sonora, the team that ended the Sockers season the past 2 years. This game coming a week after the Sockers traded defender Victor Quiroz to Sonora to fulfill his request of playing closer to home.
The Sockers found themselves in a familiar situation in the 1st quarter as Sonora scored quick to put the Sockers down 0-1 with 13:01 left in the 1st, 3rd time the Sockers trailed 0-1 at home this year. San Diego wouldn’t trail for long as Eddie Velez scored off a Brandon Escoto assist to tie the game 1-1 with 12:05 left. Less than 3 minutes later, the Sockers had their first lead of the game as Hiram Ruiz scored in the bottom left corner of the goal off an Erick Tovar assist. Sockers led 2-1 with 9:11 left in the 1st. San Diego Scored again as Brian Farber did a back heel pass off a Luis Ortega pass and the ball bounced off a Sonora player and in. Socker led 3-1 with 7:09 left in the 1st. San Diego received a blue card on Contreras and was forced to play a man down. During the power play, Chris Toth made 2 great saves and Sosa saved a goal all within a 7 second span. Sockers killed the penalty and a minute later found the back of the net again. Matt Clare scored off a John Sosa assist with 1:19 left. Sockers ended the 1st quarter with a 4-1 lead.
The 2nd quarter started like the 1st with Sonora scoring first to narrow the San Diego lead to 4-2 with 13:11 left in the 2nd. Sonora got some good shots on goal but Toth made some amazing saves to keep the score at 4-2. Matt Clare got a yellow card with 4:43 left in the 32nd for arguing with the referees on what he thought should of been a foul. Clare would have to sit for 5 minutes but no power play since it was a yellow card and not a blue card. Sonora had a free kick with 6.8 seconds left and the Sockers blocked it to maintain a 4-2 lead at halftime.
The 3rd quarter had a different start to it as the Socker were the 1st to score this time as Kraig Chiles scored his 13th goal of the year on a Matt Clare assist to bring the Socker lead to 5-2 woth 10:09 left in the 3rd. The lead wpuld get knocked back down to 2 as Sonora scored with 6:58 left in the 3rd to make thebscpre 5-3, Sockers leading. Sockers put the lead right back at 3 as Branden Escoto found the back of the net on a flying kick off a Ze Roberto assist for a 6-3 Sockers. If you guessed the lead would drop back to 2 goals, then you should play the lottery. Sonora scored to make it 6-4 with 5:43 left in 3rd. Chiles just missed a shot at the buzzer as the 3rd quarter ended with the Sockers leading 6-4.
The final quarter started just like the 1st and 2nd quarter as Sonora scored with 13:06 left in the 4th to bring the Sock ers lead down to 6-5. Sockers immediately answered back, 17 seconds later to be exact, as Erick Tovar scored off a Felipe Gonzalez goal. San Diego led 7-5 12:49 left in the 4th. Sonora brought the 6th attacker on with just over 3 minutes left in the game in an attempt tie the game. The Sockers took advantage of the open net to increase their lead to 8-5 as Cesar Cerda scored off an assist from Luis Ortega with 2:49 left in the game. The Sockers win this one 8-5 to remain undefeated.
The Sockers improve to 6-0 with their 4th home win of the season. In a well rounded team win, The San Diego Sports Domination player of the game is Chris Toth who despite giving up 5 goals, made alot of amazing saves that are the difference in this game. The Sockers next game will be December 17th at home vs Turlock.
