Sockers move to 14-3 with a 7-3 victory over Soles de Sonora

The San Diego Sockers came into Sunday with a 13-3 record and a playoff spot that they clinched following their win over Tacoma in their previous game. Their opponent was the Sonora Suns, a.k.a. Soles de Sonora. Sonora with an 11-6 record, has scored more goals (167) than anyone else in the MASL but have allowed the 4th most goals (141) in the league. With a playoff spot clinched, it was time for San Diego improve on their playoff seeding.

The first quarter started with some flares as the referee called the Sockers John Sosa for a questionable hand ball penalty. Sosa responded with some choice words and some banging of the glass before finally heading to the penalty box. Sonora was awarded a penalty and capitalized as Franck Tayou put the Suns up 1-0. The Sockers tied the game 1-1 with 9:34 left after Kraig Chiles scored his 26th goal of the season. The 1st quarter ended in a 1-1 tie but with plenty of flare left over.

The second quarter featured very little action, but still a lot of tempers. The Sockers were able to score the only goal of the quarter. Kraig Chikes scored his 2nd goal of the game off a Brandon Escoto assist to give San Diego a 2-1 lead with 1:25 left in the 2nd. Chris Toth made a great save as time expired as the Sockers led at Halftime 2-1.

Despite a whole halftime of rest, there was still a lot of tempers flying, but there were also more goals. Sonora started off the scoring by tying the game 2-2 with 11:09 left in the 3rd. The Sockers responded by taking the lead back as the new guy Jame Lovegrove scored 9:55 left to put San Diego up 3-2. Sonora tied the game again as Franck Tayou scored his second goal of the match for a 3-3 tie with 8:09 left. Sockers regained the lead again and Jamie Lovegrove scored his 3rd of the match and San Diego led 4-3 at the end of the 3rd.

The fourth quarter was a lot like the 2nd quarter with a lot of tempers and arguing and fights and missed goals. Sonora was keeping itself in the game but couldn’t find a way to tie the game. San Diego finally took control of the game when Luan Oliveira scored a power play goal off a John Sosa assist with 3:39 left in the 4th. Following the goal, there was a scuffle that resulted in two blue cards on Sockers and Sonora. The Sockers put the game away with 2 empty net goals by Raymundo Contreras and Brandon Escoto as San Diego won 7-3 over the dirtiest team in the MASL.

The Sockers improve to 14-3 in front of a crowd of 3,827. The San Diego Sports Domination player of the game goes to the new addition Jamie Lovegrove who scored 2 goals tonight in the Sockers win. The Sockers next game is Feb. 16th at Florida at 4:35pm.

PS: Photos from the game are still being edited. We will have them posted by the end of the week.
