SAN DIEGO – In a game that going in had the top two keepers in the MASL facing off, you knew it was going to take something special to win.

Brandon Escoto scored two goals as the San Diego Sockers defeated the Ontario Fury 3-2 in an overtime thriller on Ron Newman Field at Pechanga Arena San Diego on Saturday, Jan. 5 in front of 2,732.

Ontartio (6-3) held the early lead, but the Sockers (6-1) came storming back in the final quarter to push it to the extra period, but it only took an extra 107 seconds to get the victory.

Sockers keeper Boris Pardo said after the match “We knew going into overtime, there wasn’t a doubt in our minds, that we were going to win this game. That’s the belief we have to have every time we step on the field.”

The first goal of the night was credited to Juan Carlos Gonzalez, however it was more of an own goal. Pardo saved his initial shot, but the rebound ricocheted off a Sockers defender and past Pardo for the goal.

Just before halftime, Ontario’s Andy Reyes was called two minutes for boarding. The power play carried over through halftime, though nothing would happen. Nothing happened all night for either team as the teams combined to go 0-for-3 on the power play.

Ontario got another early in the fourth quarter, after a very unimpressive third quarter. Midfielder Andrae Campbell scored on a shot that was deflected into the net. The goal is his first in the MASL career.

San Diego finally broke through for their first goal of the night. Luis “Pee Wee” Ortega launched a shot that deflected off Juan Carlos Gonzalez and into the back of the net

Just after a foul deep in the Ontario end, the Sockers were granted a free kick from just outside of the crease. Right before the initial free kick, San Diego took their second and final time out to draw up a plan. Well, the plan was for Kraig Chiles to trigger the free kick and deliver it to Brandon Escoto at the top of the penalty area. Escoto then slammed the ball into the back of the net hip high on the right side. The goal also extends Escoto’s point streak to all seven games this season.

Escoto also was credited with the game-winning goal in overtime as his shot was deflected by Jose Manuel Gonzalez’s ankle and past Chris Toth to end the contest. With his second goal of the night, Escoto in his 64th game in the MASL gained his 100th point of his career. About 20 seconds earlier, the Fury had a chance to put the game away with their third attack of the period. This one with a wide-open Tony Walls about five feet away from the goal and no one within ten feet of him, including the keeper.

These same two teams will be back at it inside Pechanga Arena San Diego on Friday, Jan. 11 for a 7:35 PM first touch.
