Sockers Destroy Express 13 to 2
The San Diego Sockers faced the Turlock Express in what would be the 4th of their 5 season meetings. San Diego won the previous 3 meetings by scores of 8-1, 12-4, and 12-1. The Sockers were 16-1 all-time vs Turlock heading into Friday nights match-up. The game would also be Landon Donovan’s second career MASL game. The Sockers would be without Brian Farber and Felipe Gonzalez as they attempt to continue their dominance over the Turlock Express.
San Diego wasted no time getting on the board, scoring 2 goals in the first 30 seconds, the first goal being scored 12 seconds into the game and was the first career MASL goal for Landon Donovan. Donovan scored his 2nd goal with 7:20 left for a 3-0 San Diego lead.
Kraig Chiles made the score 4-1 on a free kick while Turlock had 5 players in the front of the goal. Chiles using veterans skill to fake a couple of defenders gave him just enough space to find the back of the net. Sockers held a 4-1 lead at the end of the 1st.
Both teams were only able to capture a goal each in the 2nd quarter with Brandon Escoto scoring for the Sockers and Omar Tapia for Turlock. The Sockers held a 5-2 halftime lead and had yet to run away with the game. But San Diego did create a more comfortable lead in the 3rd quarter with goals by Raymundo Contreras and Kraig Chiles with Chiles’ goal coming on a power play. San Diego seemed to have the game in hand at this point but the fourth quarter was where the action was.
San Diego took full control on the game as the Sockers went goal crazy to start the 4th quarter with 5 goals in the first five and a half minutes of the quarter. The Sockers out shot Turlock 34-14 in the game with 5 players getting 2 goals each (Chiles, Donovan, Escoto, and Contreras) as San Diego took the win 13-2, continuing their dominance over Turlock.
With the win, the Sockers clinch the Western Division Championship. The Sockers improve their record to 15-1 and are now 4-0 against Turlock on the Season and 17-1 overall in the season. The 3 star of the game according to the San Diego Sockers twitter are Landon Donovan, Brandon Escoto, and Kraig Chiles.
