KAMERON KELLY NAMED AAF DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

The Product of San Diego State University Becomes the Third Fleet Player to Earn Weekly Honors

(SAN DIEGO, CA) — San Diego Fleet cornerback Kameron Kelly, who set an Alliance of American Football single-game record with three interceptions on Saturday, was named AAF Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday. In addition, San Antonio quarterback Logan Woodside and Atlanta kicker Younghoe Koo were selected as Offensive Player of the Week and Special Teams Player of the Week, respectively.

Along with his three picks, Kelly added six tackles and a game-high four passes defended to help guide the Fleet (3-2) to a 27-25, come-from-behind victory over the Salt Lake Stallions (1-4) at SDCCU Stadium. The 23-year-old also returned his record-setting third interception 22 yards for a touchdown to put San Diego ahead, 24-11, with 9:26 remaining in the fourth quarter. Despite spending his collegiate career as a four-year starter at San Diego State University, Kelly had never scored at Qualcomm/SDCCU Stadium until finding the end zone Saturday. In fact, the win over Salt Lake marked Kelly’s third game back on defense after he was converted into a wide receiver by Mike Martz during training camp.

For the season, the native of Murphy, Texas, is tied for the AAF lead in interceptions (3) and has recorded 11 total tackles and a team-high seven passes defended. Kelly also has three receptions for 22 yards after starting the Fleet’s first two games of the season on offense.

While with the Aztecs, Kelly played his first three years at free safety (2014-16) before switching to cornerback his senior season — when he earned 2017 First-Team All-Mountain West honors as well as SDSU Outstanding Defensive Player of the Year. He finished his collegiate career ranked in a tie for 10th in school history with 10 interceptions, two of which came as a junior in a 34-10 win over University of Houston in the 2016 Las Vegas Bowl.

Running back Ja’Quan Gardner (Offensive Player of the Week; Feb. 26) and linebacker A.J. Tarpley (Defensive Player of the Week; Feb. 26) are the other Fleet players to have previously earned weekly league honors.

The Fleet is back in action at home against the Birmingham Iron (3-2) on Sunday. First Snap is scheduled for 5 p.m. PT at SDCCU Stadium and the contest will air live on the NFL Network. Tickets for this game and — all other Fleet home contests — are available here.
