Legion Smash Elite 45 to 15.

Coming into Sunday’s match-up against the Austin Elite, the San Diego Legion were 5th in league standings with 26 points, six points behind New York and Seattle for playoff spot. San Diego won their previous match-up against the Elite 45-17 in Austin. Now playing Austin at home, this game was a great chance for the Legion to score four Tries and get the win to move up in standings.

The Elite would get on the score board first by converting a penalty kick for a 3-0 lead.

After that, it was all Legion. Legion started their scoring when Austin miss handled a pass and back handed it straight to a Legion player who went untouched for a Try. Legion missed the point after and only led 5-3.

The Legion looked to have stole another ball from the Elite for a Try, but the ref played the penalty prior, keeping the score 5-3 Legion. With Austin backed up in their own try zone, the Elite punted high and short, Ryan Matyas returned that short kick untouched for the Legion’s 2nd try and a 12-3 San Diego lead.

Mike Te’o followed by splitting two defenders untouched to bring the Legion lead to 17-10.

Austin responded with a try of their own but the legion were back up by 14 when Nate Augspurger dove for a try in the 35′ minute. The Legion had their 2nd Try called back  as Matyas scored only to have the ref later say he stepped out of bounds. San Diego still led 24-10 at halftime.

The Legion pulled away in the 2nd half, starting with JP DU Plessis scoring on the 46th minute for the Legions 4th try of the night, giving them a bonus point in standings.

San Diego scored 4 minutes later after forcing the ball lose and having a run with it to the Try Zone for a 38-10 lead. Nick Boyer subbed in for Plessis in the 60th minute. After struggling to get point all night, Austin scored a try but missed the point after in the 73rd minute. Nick Boyer then capped off the scoring in the 79th minute and then capped off the game truck sticking a defender as the Legion rolled to a win.

The Legion up their 45-17 performance earlier in the year in Austin with a 45-15 win in San Diego (improvement maybe?). With the win, San Diego improves to 6-2-1 on the season and now have 31 points on the season after getting four points for the win, and one bonus point for scoring four or more tries. The Legion now sit one point behind Seattle and New York for a playoff spot. The Legion’s next game is Sunday April 14th at New York in a must win game.
