Pechanga Arena SD — Fighting, Goal Scoring, Defense, this game had it all. But most importantly it is a win that secures a home playoff game that will most likely be against Calgary. The Seals defeated Colorado 12-7, which also secures the season series against the Mile High based team.

“Dangerous” Dan Dawson led the Seals (10-7) with seven points on a hat trick and four assists, while Casey Jackson had four goals and a pair of assists.

Kyle Killen scored a pair of goals and assisted on two others for the Mammoth (6-11) who are still mathematically alive for the playoffs, but it will be an uphill battle for them. For the Mammoth to get in, and face the number one seed in the West, they will need to defeat Saskatchewan on April 27 or have Vancouver lose one of their remaining two games.

Killen got the scoring underway in the game just 70 seconds into the contest. He had a nice sidearm shot that got passed Frank Scigliano to give the visitors the 1-0 lead.

Dawson came back with a goal at the 3:41 mark of the opening quarter. Jackson and Connor Kelly chipped in passes that helped make that happen.

Chris Wardle scored about midway through the quarter assisted by Killen. It was the exact opposite combination than the Mammoth’s first goal.

Just over two minutes later, Turner Evans put one in the back of the net to even the game at two. Kyle “Bucky” Buchanan and Garrett Billings both assisted on the game-tying goal. That is how the first quarter would end.

Billings would get his goal 125 seconds into the second courtesy of a Kelly assist to give San Diego their first lead of the night. A Mammoth goal 73 seconds later tied the game up yet again. Colorado’s Brad Self would make it two in a row for himself on the power play for a 4-3 Mammoth lead — the final lead that Colorado would hold on the evening.

A turning point in the game happened at the 4:59 mark of the second quarter. It was at that time that San Diego’s Garrett McIntosh was called for a major elbow. A penalty that carries with it five minutes in the penalty box. Colorado could have scored as many times during that time span as they could have. The problem for Colorado is that their power play entering the evening was only hitting on 50-percent of the chances they had been awarded. On Friday, that number would go down as they were 2-of-6 on the man advantage. Neither of those two came during the crucial five-minute major. Instead it was the Seals who would score. Jackson scored a short-handed goal off Joe Walter’s first assist of the year.

A little more than four minutes later, Jackson would score his second goal of the night on the power play this time, to give San Diego a lead that they would not surrender for the rest of the night. With 1:46 remaining in the first half Colorado’s frustrations began to show. John Lintz was called first for holding the stick. While he was walking to the penalty box, he was not so gracious with his words and picked up another two minutes for unsportsmanlike conduct. Colorado would not have to worry about much as San Diego would not convert on either of the advantages.

Dawson and Buchanan tag-teamed for two goals in 31 seconds to give the Seals a 7-4 lead when all the dust was settled.

Colorado would come back with another goal by Killen’s second goal of the night to make a small dent in the Seal lead.

The Mammoth were whistled for an illegal substitution foul, and on that man advantage, Buchanan would score his second goal of the quarter to push the lead back to three.

The fans caught a glimpse of the wilder side of lacrosse at the 9:28 mark of the third quarter. San Diego’s defensemen Tor Reinholdt (6’1”, 185) and Colorado’s forward Jeff Wittig (6’2”, 205) decided it was time to study the sweet science. It was Reinholdt that would come out on top of this bout, but both parties were sent to the sin bin for five minutes each.

Nine seconds later, Jackson would score his second goal of the game from Bechanan and Dawson helpers to give the Seals a 9-5 lead.

There is usually about a five-minute time frame that the Seals defense kinda take off. Well, it was the final five minutes of the third quarter in this game. Colorado would score twice in the stretch to close to within 9-7. That would be as close as it would get however.

Dawson (power play), Buchanan (short-handed) and Jackson would all score in the fourth quarter. Jackson’s goal is Seals’ history. It was the first penalty shot in the franchise’s existence (and only the 12th such attempt in the league this year).

The Seals will wrap up the regular season next Saturday (April 27) as Buffalo comes to town. Faceoff is scheduled for 7:00 at Pechanga Arena.

Game Notes: The Seals are now 2-2 in specialty uniforms…With the win, San Diego secured a home game in the first round of the playoffs, the game will be on Monday, May 6 against Calgary, however that is not set in stone yet…Jackson’s penalty shot goal is only the fourth made across the NLL this season (on 13 attempts). Lyle Thompson of Georgia is the only multi-scorer this season…As the Seals were leading at the break, they are now 9-2 when in such a position (Colorado is 1-8 when trailing at the break)…When leading at the break at home San Diego is 5-0…Colorado held San Diego to 40 shots, 12 below their season average and eight less than what they usually give up…San Diego scored three goals in the second quarter, they now have 58 in that segment, the most in any quarter…With the 5,121 in attendance, the team is now averaging 7,700 fans per game.  This is the second largest average attendance for a team at Pechanga Arena San Diego, behind only the Gulls’ 9,021 mark.
