Paddack Dominant Against First Place Mariners

Chris Paddack had done enough in his first four starts to prove that he belonged. Even though he didn’t have a win, he had 21 strikeouts and showed flashes of the potential Padres’ fans and teammates have been hearing about.

On Wednesday afternoon at Petco Park, Paddack not only earned his first Major League victory, but did so by dominating the top-ranked offense in baseball. The Seattle Mariners came into Wednesday’s game with the most runs, hits and home runs in the game, but that didn’t scare the 23-year-old. After escaping a bases-loaded jam in the first inning, Paddack retired the final 18 batters to finish with seven innings, nine strikeouts and one hit.

Kirby Yates recorded his league-leading 12th save of the season to close out the game, lowering his ERA to 0.64.

Offensively, Ian Kinsler hit his second home run of the season in the second inning, which proved to be the difference in the 1-0 final.

Fernando Tatis Jr. also extended his hitting-streak to 12 games with a double in the third.

Former Cy Young winner Felix Hernandez came just shy of matching Paddack’s performance, allowing one run, three hits and striking out eight in his seven innings of work. Impressive, but not good enough on this day.

The win for the Padres was their 14th of the season (14-11) and third in a row, following a six-game losing streak that saw the Padres early-season momentum erased. Wednesday’s victory also secured a short two-game sweep of first place Seattle.

The surging Padres seem to be back to their winning ways, which is essential for this next part of the schedule. A day off Thursday for travel precedes a 13-game, 13-day stretch that should provide a true gauge of this year’s team. San Diego travels to Washington and Atlanta before coming home to face the Dodgers and the Mets. In that time, they are scheduled to face Max Scherzer, Steven Strasburg, Julio Teheran, Clayton Kershaw, Jacob DeGrom and Noah Syndergaard.
