THIS ONE IS GOING TO HURT FOR A WHILE

This one stings.

“Heartbreaking,” is how San Diego Seals Head Coach Patrick Merrill described it.

Curtis Dickson scored bookend goals to push Calgary past San Diego in the 2019 NLL Western Conference Semi-Final on Monday, May 6 by a 12-11 score before 5,505 boisterous fans at Pechanga Arena San Diego.

Dickson got the Roughnecks on the board just 25 seconds into the game. With no surprise Dane Dobbie was in on the assist (he finished the season second in that category). San Diego stormed back and scored three unanswered goals to take a 3-1 lead with about six minutes to go in the quarter. Dickson would close out the quarter by scoring with just .3 seconds left.

The second quarter began unceremoniously for the Seals. First was a five minute major to Drew Belgrave for boarding. No harm as the Seals scored short-handed with Connor Kearnan scoring his first of the post- season. When he scored, Calgary took a penalty, evening up the man-power. Thirty seconds later, Turner Evans got San Diego a three goal lead on his second goal of the evening. Again, Calgary took another penalty at the same time as the goal, continuing the four-on-four lacrosse. That penalty didn’t hurt Calgary. However, even when that two minutes was over, the Rough-necks were still on the power play. They cashed in When Dobbie scored at the 5:32 mark. Killing the major on Belgrave. However, the Seals would be whistled for another five minute major. This time the offending party was Garrett MacIntosh with another elbow penalty.

San Diego wouldn’t be able to kill that penalty as easily as the previous major. Calgary scored twice to tie the game up at five-all. Before halftime, “Dangerous” Dan Dawson netted a goal to give the Seals a 6-5 lead with just over two minutes to go. As the game of lacrosse has shown this season, you can’t rest for even a second. Just about a minute later, Dickson scored his hat-trick goal. That goal was challenged by the San Diego coaching staff as they thought he had stepped into the goal crease. Admittedly, from their angle it probably looked as though he did. The replays however, showed that he was outside by two inches. The goal counted and the game was tied going to the break.

The third quarter had been a big issue for the Seals during the regular sea-son. During the 18 game schedule, they were outscored by a 62-48 margin (14 goals). However, on this night, they just dominated that quarter. With Brandon Clelland (1) turnover at the center line, Tor Reinholdt (1) on a breakaway and Kyle “Bucky” Buchanan twice all scoring in the fifteen minute segment. It looked like, maybe (?) the game could’ve been in hand with a 10-8 score in the Seals favor.

As the Great Herb Brooks said to the 1980 US Men’s Hockey Team before they defeated the Russians in the Olympics. “Great moments are born from great opportunities.” Something like that must have been said by the Calgary coaching staff between quarters.

Calgary outscored the Seals 4-1 in the final frame. With the deciding goal by Dickson being scored with about eight minutes to go in the game.

With Colorado’s upset victory on Friday over the top-seed Saskatchewan (11-10 in Overtime). The Roughnecks will host the Mammoth in the West-ern Conference finals.
