San Diego — The old saying in sports is “you never know what your going to see.”

Friday night, saw history for the Seals (9-5).  The first overtime game in the franchise’s history.  The only problem was that the Philadelphia Wings (8-8) got a goal just 31 seconds into the extra period.

Zach Greer and Austin Staats both had hat tricks in the loss.  For Greer he now has 13 for the season while Staats has 27.

The Seals had four other goal scorers besides Greer and Staats.  Tre Leclaire had the first two goals of the night, Casey Jackson had a pair and Brett Hickey and Mac O’Keefe each had a solo tally.

San Diego opened the scoring just before the three-minute mark of the first quarter with a Leclaire goal.  Philadelphia put up back-to-back goals separated by 1:22 to take a 2-1 lead.  That lead would not last long as Leclaire scored two minutes later to square the score up again.  Rookie O’Keefe put one in as did Greer before Hickey scored from a ridiculous angle.  Hickey was traded from Philadelphia to San Diego less than a month ago.

The Phenom, Staats lived up to the Seal’s Hashtag (#DiveIn) when he scored on a diving effort and went five-hole for the fifth straight Seals goal.

As Isaac Newton stated in his third law of physics: “for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.”  As it turns out the Philadelphia Wings were not asleep that day in science class as they would close out the first half and the first goal of the second with six goals of their own.

After a ten-minute goal-less stretch, Staats put another in the net to stop the bleeding.  Jackson had a pair of power play goals to get a 10-9 lead for the Black and Purple.  The power play goals came while Philadelphia was serving a five-minute major for high-sticking

Three straight goals by the Wings gave them a 12-10 lead with 1:51 remaining in the game.

That is when Greer said, “ok boys hop on my back!”  The Whitby, Ontario native scored two dramatic goals to tie the game up.  The final goal for the Seals went in with less than 40 seconds on the clock.

Philly won the opening faceoff of overtime and scored the game winner.

San Diego has no time to dwell on the loss as they will be in Denver tomorrow night (Saturday, April 9) to take on the Mammoth.

Seals Notes: Dane Dobbie was a injury scratch for the game as he suffered an ankle injury last week at Toronto…With Calgary winning 13-8 over Halifax keeps everyone in the West still alive to make the playoffs…The Seals still have a way of clinching a playoff birth this weekend as a win in Colorado or losses by Vancouver and Panther City would allow them to clinch via the “back door”.
