SDSU Basketball: Looking back on the 2013 season part two.
Memories From The 2013 Season Continued
Now in the memories section this article you are going to see our CEO David Frerker’s picks for most memorable moments. Following his picks are going to be memories our readers have given us on social media! Once again feel free to give your memories in the comments section below!
Syracuse:
San Diego State had the opportunity to play on the retired air craft carrier the USS Midway for the first time in school history against a top seeded opponent in Syracuse and in front of a national audience. If you would like to refresh your memory about that game please click here to read the game preview). This is a game that the Aztecs were dominated. The wind aboard the USS Midway did not help the San Diego State three-point shooting. Regardless of the games out come, this was one of the most memorial, games in Aztec history! Social Media Reaction:
Michael Howat (ListenUpAztecs): Being on the USS Midway for the game against Syracuse. Sure, the game was garbage, but it was a terrific experience I will never forget. Watching my team play a nationally televised game against a national power with sailboats sailing by in the background.
Lydia Petroff (Aztec Fan): I loved seeing the Midway game live.
USC:
The Aztecs have held the bragging rights for the past year over USC as the Aztecs beat USC thanks to a Xavier Thames coast to coast lay-up in 2012. The Aztecs headed up to the hostile Galen Center as the underdogs and came out victorious. The Aztec fans helped SDSU battle for the win as the Galen Center started to resemble the look of Viejas North. The Aztecs would beat the Trojans by a score of 66 to 60 adding their 25th consecutive victory of schools from the great state of California.
UCLA:
The San Diego State Aztecs have beaten every good basketball program on the West Coast (Arizona, CAL, Gonzaga, Saint Marry’s and USC) and have been waiting for the opportunity to beat UCLA to make themselves the best program in California and one of the best on the West Coast. The Aztecs headed up to the Honda Center in Anaheim now nicknamed Viejas North and beat down UCLA. The Aztecs had about 70 percent of the 17,204 fans at the Wooden Classic and blew out UCLA by a score of 78 to 69. (Please click here to view the game highlights).
Social Media Reaction:
Michael Howat (ListenUpAztecs): Our fans packing the house at the John Wooden Classic, giving us a home game atmosphere in a big win against UCLA, cementing our spot as the top team in the state.
Lydia Petroff (Aztec Fan): Honda Center SDSU vs. UCLA was amazing. Before the game, the Aztec pre game rally was 99% Aztecs at JT Schmidt Bar & Grill, every time a Bruin walked in, they turned and walked out. It was RED AND BLACK DOMINATION. I knew right there, we will win this game. Aztec Fans are ready, serious, and showed up in force! We were at least 75% of the Honda Center crowd and we were ‘high fiving’ and shouting before the game started. Our Student section was full an hour before tip off. The UCLA fans and students showed up around 5 min before HALF time, you know, LA casually late “Laker fan” attitude. Their team was already DOWN.
Fresno State:
The this season was the first time in a long time that San Diego State played their rival Fresno State. Everyone knows about the battle of the Oil Can for football and how competitive that game is. The Aztecs drove up to Fresno and met a hostile crowd. The Aztecs would be only one of a handful of teams who would be able to sweep the Fresno State Bull Dogs this season extending the Aztecs historical winning streak against California teams of 33 straight games. Now the most memorable play of the first game against Fresno State got the San Diego Sports Domination YouTube Channel onto the global map. Jamaal Franklin had the dunk of the year in this game causing the video to go viral. We have since been linked into 100 plus news websites and 10 newscasts. The video now has over 1.7 million views. (Please click here to view the game highlights)
Social Media Reaction:
Robert Moreno of Chicken Friars (FanSided Padres Website): My number one memory is the Jamaal Franklin ally-oop to himself.
Boise State:
The San Diego State Aztecs playing Boise State at Viejas and the game comes down to the last shot. Yes it has happened two years in arrow for Boise State at Viejas. In the 2012 season Boise State lost on a last second three-point shot that was going good and then bounced out of the rim. This time San Diego States Chase Tapley would have the ball with enough time left on the clock for one shot. Chase Tapley would hit the three-point shot to lead the Aztecs to a 63 to 62 victory over Boise State at Viejas Arena.
Social Media Reaction:
David Goderre (Aztec Fan) The three-point shot against Boise! The place went crazy!
Michael Howat (ListenUpAztecs): Chase Tapley hitting a 3 at the buzzer to win by one against Boise in Viejas. The place was deflated after blowing a big lead, but never gave up. The eruption when he hit that shot was unbelievable.
